Undergraduate Degree

The undergraduate DGS Program is an upper division program.  Students apply into the program during the second semester of their sophomore year and spend three semesters on-campus. This is followed by a 6-month clinical/practicum internship at an affiliated cytogenetics or molecular laboratory.

Upon completion of the DGS Program graduates with a concentration in cytogenetics are eligible to sit for the certification examination in Cytogenetics (CG), and graduates with a concentration in molecular diagnostics are eligible to sit for the certification examinations Molecular Biology (MB), both offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Board of Certification (ASCP BOR).

Students in the DGS Program take coursework in both cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics, but concentrate in one or the other during their final internship semester.

Individuals in both fields are needed in a variety of diagnostic, research, and industry settings, and jobs have remained plentiful, even in rough economic times.
