Cytogenetics Exit Expectations

Upon graduation from the Diagnostic Genetic Sciences Program the cytogenetics student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate proper methods of collection, transport, and handling of cytogenetic samples.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of requisitioning.
  3. Select proper culture techniques based on sample type and reason for referral.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate techniques of culture initiation.Cytogenetics Cell Culture at UCONN
  5. Demonstrate proper techniques of cytogenetic harvest and slide preparation.
  6. Demonstrate proper techniques for G-banding and special staining (including FISH).
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of microscopy and demonstrate proper use of brightfield and fluorescent microscopes.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of computer imaging and demonstrate proper use of a computer imaging system.
  9. Identify chromosome polymorphisms and abnormalities and evaluate their relationship to the appropriate referral process.
  10. Write complete and accurate cytogenetics reports.
  11. Exhibit appropriate ethical and professional behavior.
  12. Practice good general laboratory skills, including quality assurance, quality control, and laboratory safety.
  13. Interpret, implement, and comply with relevant laws, regulations, guidelines, and accrediting standards.
  14. Correlate test results with patient history and diagnosis.
  15. Communicate effectively with peers, other health professionals, and the public.
  16. Apply acquired knowledge to new situations.
  17. Recognize the need for continuing education and implement a personal plan of lifetime learning and skill development.
